What A Great Find! Emerald earrings, à la Jolie

photo

On an impromptu shopping trip to New York & Company, I found these gorgeous emerald-like drop earrings, worthy of the red carpet.  Inspired by Angelina Jolie’s pair that she wore to the Oscars, these are a fortunate find during award show season AND they were deeply discounted!  I’ve been looking for a near exact replica since I fell in love with Jolie’s and these are very similar.  I also snapped up the matching bracelet.

Oversized statement earrings like these reprised their role on the red carpet at the Golden Globes last Sunday.  While there are no black tie events in my future, I look forward to wearing these with a black cocktail dress and suede pumps on a date night.

Happy Award Season!

Slightly Obsessed?

IMG_1988_edited

So apparently I’m slightly obsessed with non-blue jeans…  Do you remember life before colored jeans?  The choices in casual pants were so boring!  Blue jeans, jeans with holes, skinny jeans, more jeans and the occasional pair of khakis… the options were limited.  But a couple years ago, jeans in red, cobalt, green and other colors of the rainbow burst onto the fashion scene.  I first acquired pairs in coral and purple last December.  I debated investing in more colors because I wasn’t sure if this was a passing fad or if they were here to stay.  That spring the options flourished and today, colored jeans are still going strong.  Nearly every store carries multiple colors and they’re continually featured in fashion magazines.  But I’m sure I don’t have to tell YOU that!

So now that colored jeans have joined the arsenal of casual pants, I may have developed a small obsession.  They’re just so fun and such a refreshing change of pace!  My latest pairs are in pale rose and, my first patterned jeans, a floral print on mint from Charlotte Russe.  See below for tips on how to wear non-blue jeans and how I plan to wear mine!

How to wear colored jeans:

  • Pair them with neutrals or very pale shades of coordinating colors
  • Play with textures – soft knits, sequins, suede…
  • Accessorize with a coordinating color
  • Wear the right shoe.  Flats, pumps and booties work best.

I Prefer “Bordeaux”

After spotting it on numerous runways and subsequent street style blogs, the fashion authorities have dubbed “oxblood” the color of the season.  This deep shade of red, along with its several variations, is perfect for this time of year!

As a wine lover (not connoisseur –  I usually enjoy anything as long as it’s made of fermented fruits), I prefer to call it “Bordeaux.”  Making a statement with red is nothing new, but this season bordeaux is rich and infused with romance, royalty and rock.  Thankfully, this dramatic color is super easy to wear with neutrals you might already have in your closet and leopard print.  To add a little more drama, select Bordeaux pieces in leather, velvet or other luxe textures.

When I paint the town… bordeaux, I pair my velvet-like burgundy skinny pants with a sleeve-less black top, camel faux leather jacket, leopard print heels and gold jewelry.  While I’m keeping it casual I wear the same pants with an ivory 3/4 length sleeve sweater, a beige sweater vest with fur trim and leopard print smoking slippers.

Polished, Perfect and Pretty, Grâce à Dior and BAZAAR

Polished, perfect and pretty.  That’s the idea behind Dior’s new “Dressy Nudes” look.  As a newly minted Style Ambassador for Harper’s Bazaar I was invited to try the look at Macy’s Dior counter.  The results?  Flawless and flirty without appearing too made up.  I especially liked the light feeling, yet full coverage of the Airfinish foundation and the flirty eye makeup.  I would love to own Dior Vernis Nail Lacquer in Dune and Charnelle and Rouge Dior Nude in Trompe loeil.

While I enjoyed the friendly company of the Dior makeup artist and fellow animal lover, I wish I learned more about the “Dressy Nudes” look.  I brought home the useful pamphlet and took the fun quiz to see if my personality should try the Feminine, Sensuous, Elegant or Divine look.  I was a little of all…

As a BAZAAR Style Ambassador, I have joined “a niche nationwide network of the most influential, well-connected and chic readers chosen to represent the BAZAAR brand.” Simply put, this means I get the opportunity to try new products, attend exclusive events and win fabulous prizes! All in the name of fashion.

Let’s Get Away: Memorial Day Weekend 2012

This weekend is the celebration of Memorial Day, which hopefully means you’re going to the beach, the lake, a friend’s pool or at least a barbeque!  It certainly does to me!  I’ll be at the lake with some friends, riding on the boat and catching rays.  More importantly, Memorial Day is when we remember those who have died in active military service so that we can enjoy freedom.  The celebration of their lives and our freedom also marks the unofficial start of summer livin’.  Oh how I love three day weekends of sun and fun!

It also means I have to pack…  Do you know how much I hate packing?  It’s in the top 5 of things I least enjoy doing.  But I’m here to make it easy on you.  You’re welcome.  So keeping the patriotic and summer fun theme in mind, below are some ideas of what to wear Memorial Day weekend 2012.

Orange maxi dress:  Orange is The Color of the season and lucky for us it looks great on every skin color!  It warms the skin and provides an instant glow.  Maxi dresses are also very popular as they are easy to style and make your body appear longer and leaner.  When I first ordered this Alloy dress a few years ago people would joke with me by asking if I was headed to the prom.  Oh the riducle fashion-forward people face in the Midwest!  But thankfully, long dresses have caught on and are now easy to find (and wear) everywhere!

Turquoise Beaded Boho Hoops from Windsor, Bangle set from Loft, Raffia satchel with Tassel trim from New York & Co., Orange maxi dress from Alloy, Cotton Herringbone Four Pocket Jacket from Loft, Natasha Accessories Beaded Bangle Set from Dillard’s, Sofft “Ravenna” Sandals from Dillard’s

V-Neck Maxi Dress from New York and Co., Heritage tie-waist chiffon patio dress from Banana Republic, Blue Juice Desert Romance Maxi Dress from Dillard’s

Something mint, aqua or sea foam:  I adore the color of these Candie’s Color Denim Shortie Shorts that I just found at Kohl’s!  Pair it with white and statement-making accessories or a complementing pastel like lilac or pale yellow.

Lace Up Crop Cami from American Eagle Outfitters, Candie’s Color Denim Shortie Shorts from Kohl’s, Turquoise Beaded Boho Hoops from Windsor, Beaded Wrap Bracelet from American Eagle Outfitters, Knotted Wedge Sandal from Charlotte Russe, Steve Madden Fringy Fringe Hobo from Dillard’s

White sundress: The white sundress is a summer classic.  Make it sweet and sexy by combining lace with a corset, like this one from Topshop.  I chose to keep it simple with neutral accessories.  Floppy hats and tortoise sunglasses are so chic and offer necessary protection from the sun.  (Did anyone see Schmidt’s shout out to tortoise in Gwyneth Paltrow’s goop newsletter?  Max Greenfield of New Girl said of his tortoise iPhone case, “Every so often someone will confuse it for leopard print. How embarrassing. For them.”  Bahaha!  Love him!)  But seriously kids, protect yourself from the sun this weekend!  I love hats but I don’t usually wear them.  Protection from the sun is the perfect excuse to feel glam in a floppy one!

Striped Floppy Hat from Forever 21, Lace Corset Flippy Dress from Topshop, Tortoise sunglasses from Tommy Hilfiger, Knotted Wedge Sandal from Charlotte Russe, Pave and Natural Stone Round Drop Earrings from Loft, Raffia satchel with Tassel trim from New York & Co., Beaded Wrap Bracelet from American Eagle Outfitters

Retro-inspired swimsuit:  To stand out in a sea of neons, jungle prints and tribal patterns, try a retro swimsuit.  I found this adorable cherry-print bikini from Old Navy on clearance for $10!  Look for halters with molded cups and sweetheart necklines and fuller briefs in classic colors or nostalgic prints.  Again take advantage of wearing a cute hat this weekend!

Straw Fedora from Forever 21, Cherry-Print Bikini from Old Navy, Whitney Earrings from Tessyla on Etsy, Candie’s Color Denim Shortie Shorts from Kohl’s, Leather Flip Flops from Gap

Tropical print or crop top:  To add spark to your Memorial Day wardrobe throw in something with a bright tropical print or a sexy crop top – perfect for visiting the nearest town pub.  Both of these trends have been heating up the runways and seen on many celebrities this spring.  Pair the jungle-inspired piece with a separate in a solid color to balance the wild pattern.  I added natural-colored accessories with bold neon details to emphasize the eyecatching bright colors without going overboard.  While crop tops may invoke memories of the girls of Clueless and other 90s pop stars, there’s no need to worry about feeling like a heifer to rock one.  Today they’re easier to wear thanks to high-waisted skirts or capris that cover the navel.

Jaime King, Kristen Stewart, Selena Gomez

Crate Clutch from Alloy, Hawaiian Print Bralet from Topshop, Neon Chain Earrings from Windsor, Neon Faux Cork Wedges from Charlotte Russe, Perfect Circle Skirt from Nasty Gal, Pressed Bangle Set from Forever 21

Now get to packing and have a fashionable, fun and safe weekend!

Thank you to all who have served in the United States military and for the freedom you have allowed me.  Yes, you too brother and cousin.

The Tourists: NYC

For the past couple of days, my mom and I have been playing tourist in New York City.  Here’s what we’ve been up to…

Friday we walked a few blocks from our hotel to Lincoln Center, home of the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, to see the fashionable arrive and depart the ongoing shows.  We talked to an Australian girl with awesome tights but there wasn’t much else going on at the time.  Then we ventured to Century 21.  If you’re not familiar with this haven, please add it to your To Shop list next time you’re in New York.  It has designer clothes and shoes at up to 80% off.  It’s where I got my first pairs of Manolo Blahnik and Valentino shoes in September.  (Expect to see a post about these glorious acquisitions in the future.)  I didn’t get anything THAT spectacular this time but I did get a beautiful taupe dress from MICHAEL by Michael Kors and a taupe tank with a black Peter Pan collar and buttons.  At the moment, I have a thing for taupe/tan and black.

Then we ate at P.J. Clarke’s across from Lincoln Center, a casual, but upscale pub with a good selection and great service.  Their French onion soup is one of the best I’ve had.  And I love me some FOS.  Afterward we REALLY turned up the tourist notch by taking a cab to meet my mom’s cousin, George, at TKTS at Times Square to get tickets to a Broadway production.  After hesitantly agreeing to see “Other Desert Cities” with Stockard Channing we walked to Macy’s.

My parents watched a special about Macy’s and were fascinated to discover that some of the original wood escalators are still in use today.  Riding these historical escalators was the highlight of the trip thus far, according to my mother.

Mom on Macy’s escalators

After I regained composure from all the excitement from Macy’s escalators, we walked to the Shake Shack for a light dinner before the show.  Mom and I shared a ‘Shroom Burger.  Delicious.  “Was there a Portobello mushroom in it?” mom asked.  There was too much Muenster and Cheddar cheese to tell.

On our way to the show I dashed inside Forever 21 for what I thought was a quick look at the store I know and love.  But this location has four floors!  FOUR floors of trendy, cheap clothing and I hadn’t even seen some of the items before.  I grabbed a frilly blue & white polka-dotted wrap dress, two sheer fishtail skirts in pink and black and a shiny black pleated tower maxi-dress.  Expect to see these in posts this summer.

We ended our night in one of the best ways possible in the Big Apple… at a Broadway production.  “Other Desert Cities” was the first non-musical that I had seen in New York.  It was exceptional.  I was looking forward to seeing Stockard Channing.  Yes, the actress who portrayed Rizzo, the bad ass Pink Lady in Grease.  But more importantly to me, she was Aunt Frances Owens in Practical Magic, my favorite movie.  But I wasn’t sure about the play.

The Booth Theatre is small, intimate and there can’t be a bad seat in the house.  Much to my delight, Rachel Griffiths, from Brothers and Sisters, appeared on stage along with Channing.  I laughed.  I cried.  I felt what they felt.  Exceptional.  Following the standing ovation, we waited by the stage door for the actors to exit.  Mom and I were ecstatic to meet and get the autographs of Stockard Channing, Rachel Griffiths, Judith Light and Justin Kirk.

Saturday we traveled to Rockefeller Center to see the famous Christie’s auction house, which was unfortunately closed.  Guess we’ll have to plan another trip to NYC, mom.  We watched the ice skaters and stopped in the stores of NBC, Lego, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and American Girl.  Check out my new shirt from NBC.

Then we went to Soho, known for its trendy shops and art galleries.  We ate at the Broome Street Bar at the recommendation of a man on the street, where we tried their famous hamburger in a pita.  It was very tasty.  On our walk through the hip neighborhood I spotted Topshop, the super trendy and fantastic British store, which also had four stories.  (FOUR!)  I’ve visited topshop.com but it was my first time in an actual store, as there are only two in the states.  It reminded me of a more upscale Forever 21 (forgive me for loving that damn store even though I am clearly not forever 21) but several pieces were more unique and better designed.  They are known for recreating designer pieces.  I ended up with a pair of very dangly gold Grecian earrings, perfect for my shoot on Monday.  TopShop is my new love.  We also visited Amarcord Vintage Fashion, which was on my To Shop list for its collection of European vintage clothing and accessories from the 1940s to the 1980s.  It had several beautiful and interesting pieces from Christian Dior, Versace and Gucci, to name a few.  I only lusted.

Exhausted from our two days of being tourists, we made the long trek back to the Hudson Hotel to rest up for Sunday, the day of the Derek Lam show.  The show was amazing.  Details to come…  Thank you for following along on my adventures.
